Overview

This half-day, in-person course provides healthcare professionals with in-depth knowledge and practical skills required for the safe and effective care of patients with a tracheostomy. The training covers clinical techniques, emergency procedures, and patient-centred care, enabling professionals to deliver high-quality support across various healthcare settings.


🎯 Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system as it relates to tracheostomy care

  • Identify the indications, types, and functions of different tracheostomy tubes

  • Master procedures for cleaning, suctioning, and maintaining tracheostomy tubes

  • Recognise and manage potential complications, such as infection, blockage, or accidental dislodgement

  • Perform emergency tracheostomy care, including response to airway obstruction or tube displacement

  • Understand the psychosocial impact of tracheostomy on patients and their families

  • Communicate effectively with patients who have a tracheostomy, including the use of alternative communication aids
