This half-day, in-person course provides healthcare professionals with in-depth knowledge and practical skills required for the safe and effective care of patients with a tracheostomy. The training covers clinical techniques, emergency procedures, and patient-centred care, enabling professionals to deliver high-quality support across various healthcare settings.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Understand the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system as it relates to tracheostomy care
Identify the indications, types, and functions of different tracheostomy tubes
Master procedures for cleaning, suctioning, and maintaining tracheostomy tubes
Recognise and manage potential complications, such as infection, blockage, or accidental dislodgement
Perform emergency tracheostomy care, including response to airway obstruction or tube displacement
Understand the psychosocial impact of tracheostomy on patients and their families
Communicate effectively with patients who have a tracheostomy, including the use of alternative communication aids

Assessment: Practical demonstration and written assessment
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Tracheostomy Care and Management Certificate, valid for 2 years.
