This half-day, in-person course offers comprehensive training in digital rectal examination (DRE), manual evacuation techniques, and safe bowel care practices. It is specifically designed for healthcare professionals supporting individuals with bowel dysfunction, ensuring they can deliver effective, dignified, and person-centred care.
Participants will:
Understand the anatomy and physiology of the bowel and the clinical importance of bowel management
Learn the indications for digital and manual evacuation, including patient assessment criteria
Gain hands-on skills in performing Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) and manual evacuation safely and competently
Explore the appropriate use of bowel care products and medications
Identify and manage potential complications related to bowel care procedures
Apply strategies to preserve patient dignity and comfort during intimate procedures
Learn how to document bowel management accurately and educate patients effectively
This course is suitable for:
Registered Nurses
Healthcare Assistants
Caregivers and Support Workers
Clinical staff responsible for bowel care in hospitals, care homes, or community settings
Duration: Half Day (½ day)
Mode: In-person training only
Assessment: Practical demonstrations and written assessment
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Digital, Manual Evacuation and Bowel Management Certificate, valid for 2 years.
